As I posted in my introduction I do not use weights except for squats and deadlifts. The rest of my training is weighted calisthenics. I am seeing more and more of guys going very heavy low rep bench presses, and less squats and deadlifts.

Do these guys realize that to get big and muscular requires hard leg training? If you leave out these power leg movements you will not grow.
And what is the deal with benching 500lbs one rep? I don't get these guys.

These schmucks are in every gym. They're not body builders..they never last long no way. Usually 3 years max n they disappear..until training becomes a lifestyle you'll never get them to do legs...these guys main motivation is the opposite sex. They're not it it for the artwork of body, health, self improvement, self challenge n many other things that motivate a life long member of this life

Honestly i really dont agree w this. I cant do deadlifts because i have a bad vertebrae that pops out when i do yet i build muscle. And i dont really do squats because i play alot of softball yet my legs a developed and porportionate to my upper body. Its all in how u train. Not everyone concentrates on the big lifts and still achieves goals.

I feel if you've already built up a good base and squats/deads don't agree with you, there's absolutely no reason to say they are a requirment. Sure, I love me some squats, and I believe they are the king leg builder, but to each their own. Solid legs can be built without them.

Ya I agree with this one. I love me my squats and deadlifts, I'll be doing them as long as my body lets me. As for solid legs w/o squats and deadlifts, just look at DG lol.

I still do leg press, quad exstensions, and calf raises. My legs are just fine. Lol

lol...don't tell him not to do squats and deads. I would say there are many ways around the power moves but most of the older guys stop them..BUT they did do them at some point. Just like in DrB's post ..the guys doing the flat bench because the dumb inclined are too hard. I still do the flat bench as a warm up but the incline dumbs rule in my book also. The big impressive Hammer Strength Leg presses dont kill me like squats, and nothing kills me like deads. I built up on them but not anymore.I do them but I use intermediate weight.
Nothing used to make feel better than deads and squats...wait let me re-phrase...nothing felt better when I was done doing them..lol. Too old for those heavy power moves.
I guess I should not say too old because the old man still does them. How about I don't like to do them anymore???

ya, if you can still do leg press you can still work your legs good. I used to always do leg extensions but been straying away from it. I used to have tendinitis in both knees from snowboarding and can feel it tickling my knees from time to time. And from your pics I'd agree, your legs are looking good.

Its just my back is tricky from an old work accident. Sometimes even when im playing ball my L7 will shift and my back tightens up and i have to get an adjustment. I used to do deads a d squats in hs and college but after hurting my back 20 yrs ago id rather have a healthy back then giant legs. Lol

Ya I remember that pic from before, just crazy ass legs right there.

situps adnauseum.jpg Well here is my bro zeke...all those squats and deads and he ain't go no legs! (i will get shit for this) Izzy has the wheels but he does does every kind of leg work there is.

But you know bro...that is what you call experience. When we hurt something we keep on going and find a way to work around it.

Ya my back and left side neck is fucked cus I had a serious motorcycle accident, no heavy deads or squats for me unless I want to be in the hospital or recover for the next few weeks. I opt for leg press machines etc.

lol...I think Drb has addressed this in his poetic writings many times. We learn from mistakes move on and change routines to suit us. I hear ya bro....you love the iron but you got an injury. Hell no...the iron should be fun and make you strong..not to go to a hospital

I agree.. I noticed a big difference in strength when I started doing legs twice a week.

I am the same way now that I'm into my 40s and I've dealt with my share of back pains and injuries....in and out of the chiropractor. I still have a love/hate relationship with my squats and deads.....as in I hate to do them, but love it when I've gotten through them....and I no longer go super heavy on either. I use moderate weight and increase the reps. That strategy has worked best for me to keep from getting injured and progressing nicely with size and strength

I have issues with squats also, had a bad motorcycle accident and shredded my knee. I can do squats but not ass in the grass. I use other exercises to compensate. Although I do legs just not like you.

Anyone serious about training will train their legs just as hard as any other body part.

Ya man whatev come talke me to when ur 42 and 10% bf and dont have a broken back and a fucked up shoulder. Im serious as fuck about training.

I am 41 and 10% bf. Have had my share of injuries over the years from training heavy but I deal with it the best I can and keep treatment all the time.

Same here but training legs isnt all its about u have to train wvery muscle equally. Thats my philosphy.

I used to train heavy on squats and deads. The most I've reached was 425 x 2 on squats and deads 1RM @ 475. After that I was pretty much done with lower body workouts. I'll work them out probably once in a blue moon but I don't hit them anymore because I don't care for them. I'm not a competitive body builder...
I like walking up the stairs in my house and I like being able to walk down them without having to hold on to my dear life on the rail & I like being able to wear pants that aren't tight around my thighs which is super uncomfortable plus it's nice having space for my TESTICLES.

Try walking thru Disney world or anywhere for a while with those hard worked massive quads and tell me u don't leave with a nasty red baby rash...I do try to train calves since they're pretty much out there when wearing shorts though. With that being said I focus mostly on upper body & calves. No hammies or quads. Fuck that.
