NPC/IFBB introduce "Classic Physique" men's division

Breaking news today by the NPC,

Starting in 2016, they will introduce a new men's division "classic physique", which is in between men's physique and bodybuilding, with more emphasis on conditioning, aesthetics, and symmetry with a smaller waist, more muscle mass than men's physique and less than bodybuilding.

Competitors will be posing in spandex trunks, doing mandatory poses

I personally think this is a big breath of fresh air for the sport,and as i see it as a way to get back to the classic look of the 70s and 80s body builders. The sport in general has gone a bit overboard with the extreme freakiness, extended guts, and over the top muscle mass of today's body builders. It's become less appealing to look at and this new division gets back to what bodybuilding is all about in my opinion. Men's physique has also been great for the sport, but for those that want a little more mass, and want to pose this is the perfect division. I myself cannot wait to compete in this division in 2016! This is exactly what I've been waiting for.

Here is the article also with a video

Yes, I think the demand for change was there, and they heard what everyone wanted, so they answered with this division to help bring life to the sport again. Going back to the roots of bodybuilding and what made it great in the first place

A few thoughts as a physique competitor;

I'm going up against BODYBUILDERS in board shorts, I can't compete with that. Today men's physique is not @ all what it was intended to be. I can hold my own in Master's but I'm getting smoked in the Open because I'm up there with guys who should be light-heavies in BB-ing (they just don't have the legs)

Part of me hopes this new class allows me to be more competitive in Physique, another part of me says "another class?" these shows are bursting @ the seams with competitors as it is. The national show in Pittsburgh last weekend had something like 3-4,000 athletes. The BB-ing prejudging went from 10:30am - 11pm...THE PREJUDGING! And they're never going to have a cut-off. Backstage....waiting, waiting, waiting.....I understand the promoter needs to make money but this is no way to treat the athletes.

A big part of what you are talking about is exactly the reason this class was created. The physique guys were just getting too big, and its become the opposite of what that class started out as and was ever intended to be. When you have guys in that class that have as much muscle as light heavyweight bodybuilders, you know you have a,problem. Classic physique is meant to bridge this gap between the classes and offer a good place for everyone to fit.

With my current stats and my goals, classic physique is perfect to me. I've never had any desire to be a,mass monster. I admire and idolize the great physiques of the golden era like Frank Zane, Sergio, Arnold, etc...

It's funny that you mention Zane. In February when my coach told me about this new class my response was "Oh, like Frank Zane?"

Whattya say brotha, we going to rock the stage together?

Sadik will be the face of this division, in my opinion.

My first thought was that Sadik would be perfect for this division, but he already released a statement saying he will NOT be competing in classic physique

I think he is only saying that due to competing in the upcoming Olympia in Physique. If he says he is going to move up, it could effect his placing.

You make a great point. It will be interesting to see how it plays out on the future.

Sadik is a bodybuilder, look at the size of this guy.

I'm not taking anything away from his physique but he proves my previous point.

He has some size, but he's around 185 lbs on stage.

I think he has grown a little in the last couple years, and a little bigger than that now, but yeh he is only around 195 max on stage at 5'11"

His physique, tie ins, separation, and muscle bellies certainly give him a much larger appearance than he really is. Having his tiny waist and incredible V taper gives him a much more 3 dimensional appearance as well. The guy just has some of the best aesthetics I've ever seen

Marc Lobiner actually has the correct take on this, its BS from the get go. The Judges ruined the sport, if they actually judged correctly they wouldn't have to create a new division. I don't know anybody who thinks that Mr Olympia is nothing more then a freak show, everybody longs for the days of the 60 and 70s.

Freak show would be the best way to describe the Olympia. I hope this division turns things around but even if it doesn't it will give a good bunch of guys the opportunity to compete in something that remotely resembles bodybuilding, and that has to be a good thing.

I can see this saving Bodybuilding, from what I keep reading Mens Physique is the only thing that is holding things together at this point.

I saw lobliners video, and I somewhat agree with him, however I absolutely love the new division with the way it is set up. It goes by both height and weight, so you cant exceed a certain weight for a given height, preventing anyone short that is just huge and massive from competing against guys that are more aesthetic. The stats in the class lineup perfectly with the bodybuilding physiques of the 70s and early 80s, when that aesthetic appearance was its best.

Right now there is just too much of a gap between physique and bodybuilding. Even the physique class, which only goes by height, has been going out of control and the guys were getting bigger and bigger. They now look like light heavyweight body builders up there, and that's not what the division is about.

We need to preserve the classic look that made bodybuilding what it was, and make it big and popular again without freak show. Then maybe we won't have pro bodybuilders dropping dead before 50 like is going on nowadays

Exactly. I was on the fence about whether I was even going to compete again, because I just refuse to do some of the things that others do to be competitive. I will not use insulin, and crazy dosages on anything. I Love the lifestyle but my health and longevity is most important to me. Not to mention that I just don't find the look of the open bodybuilding class appealing. It's over the top and not what I'm after, but I also had no desire to compete in physique again.mi was told by judges I needed to come down in mass if I wanted to be competitive which I also refuse to do.

This new class has excited me and gets me eager to hit the stage again. It is absolutely perfect for my goals and exactly what I'm after

Looking @ the top 5 in Physique @ the Olympia this weekend and my thoughts;

1st off all 5 guys looks absolutely tremendous and should be congratulated.

I'm guessing you'll hear this over the next few months; "Buendia was the winner because Sadik got dinged for being "too big" for physique"

This setting up the buzz for Classic Physique for 2016.

Anyone with me on this?
