I've had hernias and they were not sore when lying down. And the popping sound isn't anything I've experienced either.

I had same one repaired twice. First time was old school patch. I broke it again within 2 years. 2nd time Dr used new procedure at the time. Much bigger piece that goes inside muscle lining. I assume same thing you had.

Pinning the thighs can be tough. Seems like lots of things to hit and cause pain. Whenever I pin my left thigh I hit this damn nerve. My leg jumps like a reflex!
I avoid them now.
