Can you experts break down HGH / Insulin

Hi guys,
So I know what HGH is (im not thinking of using it), my question is how does it work? What makes it different from a steroid? And the Insulin? How does it help bodybuilding? Just so happens my roommate has bags and more bags of the pen form. He is diabetic.

I'm not a pro BB or anything, but the HGH interest me.
