Been sending out proposals and DMs for weeks now and getting almost no replies. Have a decent portfolio and rates that seem fair. What actually works for getting that first client without spending hours on applications that go nowhere?
The biggest mistake I made early on was treating every client the same. I sent the same generic pitch to everyone and wondered why nobody replied. Then I started doing real research. I would spend fifteen minutes looking at their website, their social media, their recent posts. Then I would write a short message that mentioned something specific I noticed and offered a simple solution. Not a long sales pitch, just a genuine observation. That changed everything. My reply rate went from zero to maybe one in ten. It still took time, but at least I was getting conversations started. That first client came from a message like that. The pattern I saw was preparation, not luck. I found a lot of useful advice on PinoyFreelance that helped me refine this approach even further.
