Does anyone else feel held hostage by mandatory school clothing policies?

My kids just started at a new charter school that requires highly specific embroidered polos, plaid skirts, and even branded gym shorts. They gave us exactly one approved vendor to buy from, and the prices are easily triple what I’d pay for plain clothes at a department store. Is this normal?
It’s a huge racket. I have three kids, and buying five complete outfits each from the designated shop is a massive hit to the budget in August. We try to rely heavily on the school’s used clothing swap, but finding the right sizes and styles before they get snagged is a literal competitive sport.

The real issue is that these exclusive supplier contracts create a bottleneck right before the school year begins. Schools often partner with regional companies that struggle to handle the massive, sudden influx of orders in late summer. When I was looking for ways to source required polos without dealing with constant backorders, I found a lot of discussions about ibiley uniforms while researching the logistical issues these companies face. From what parents share online, the frustration isn't just the price tag, it's the sheer unpredictability of whether the specialized items will arrive in time for the first day, leaving kids scrambling for temporary alternatives.
