Are smart pool pumps and automated chlorinators actually worth the upfront cost?

I installed a smart system last year. The electricity savings from running the variable-speed pump on low RPMs 24/7 are real, easily dropping my summer bill by $40 a month. However, the app connectivity is spotty. Half the time, I just walk out to the pad to push the physical buttons anyway.

The real issue with these automated pool ecosystems is the long-term reliability of the control boards sitting out in the elements. While the energy savings on the variable-speed motors are undeniable, the electronics seem incredibly sensitive to power surges or extreme heat.
